The triple chip grind is essentially a variant of an A.T.B configuration. By adding a middle tooth with a chamfer on each side & a flat top & protruding ever so slightly from the other teeth ( usually .5mm max.) between the one that cuts to the left & the one that cuts to the right. So the blade cuts thus, left, middle, right, middle, left & so & so forth.
By combining two different tooth grinds in one blade – an A.T.B grind with an extra middle flat top & chamfered tooth protruding essentially.
As a result of the extra tooth, the working ( cutting) load is therefore reduced & consequently lifespan is greatly increased. Apart from it’s longer service life, it’s particularly suited for very dense materials such as hard woods, plastics & even in some cases metals ( usually non ferrous) as well as abrasive modern made made materials such as M.D.F & laminated, veneered wood by products.
By alternating between all these different teeth, a middle tooth with chamfered sides & flat top( often referred as a raker tooth)followed by a trapezoidal tooth makes the blade an extremely durable tool hence it’s popularity in high volume situations/circumstances where good edge retention is a determining factor.
